Creedence Clearwater Revival
at Woodstock 1969

Despite being one of the biggest bands of 1969, CCR's Woodstock performance was kept out of the documentary by John Fogerty's own veto.

An apparently sleepy performance by the Grateful Dead and a firm veto by singer John Fogerty resulted in an undocumented performance at Woodstock by legendary rock outfit Creedence Clearwater Revival.

The California-based rock outfit was formed in 1965, and after a few shuffles within the band, the lineup consisted of lead guitarist and lyricist John Fogerty, rhythm guitarist Tom Fogerty, bassist Stu Cook, and drummer Doug Clifford.

CCR is best known for hit songs from their records. From 1969 to 1970, CCR ruled the rock charts with their distinctive "swamp rock" style. Their second album "Bayou Country" reached #7 on the Billboard charts. From that album, the single "Proud Mary" reached #2 on the Billboard chart and would later be their most covered song. Mere weeks after "Proud Mary" was released, "Bad Moon Rising" was also released and hit #2. Their third album "Green River" was released and the title track also hit #2 on the charts.

At the wee hours of the night, CCR took the stage for a crowd that had just finished mellowing out to an arduously long performance by the Grateful Dead. John Fogerty of CCR refused to allow their performance to be included in the documentary, feeling that the circumstances had created a performance not good enough to be documented.

Eventually four songs from the set were released in the 1994 commemorative box set, but the original Woodstock 1969 soundtrack and film is completely void of any Creedence footage.

CCR disbanded in 1972 after a harsh dispute surfaced between John and Tom Fogerty. Creedence Clearwater Revival was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

★ Woodstock Highlight

Despite being one of the biggest bands in America in 1969, John Fogerty vetoed CCR's inclusion in the Woodstock documentary, feeling the late-night performance to a sleepy crowd wasn't their best work.
