Melanie — Woodstock 1969
Melanie Safka, known simply as Melanie, came to Woodstock when the Incredible String Band refused to perform in the rain, and the festival organizers needed a replacement. She took the stage nervously before a massive crowd, becoming one of the most unexpected breakthrough moments of the entire festival.
Born in Astoria, Queens, New York in 1947, Melanie had been signed to Buddah Records and had released her debut album in 1969. Though relatively unknown when she arrived at Woodstock, her performance changed everything. The sight of audience members lighting candles and matches to guide her through the rainy darkness so moved her that she wrote "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" about the experience. Released in 1970, the song reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became her signature recording.
Her Woodstock performance also inspired "Beautiful People," which she performed at the festival. The song captures the communal spirit of the half-million people gathered on Max Yasgur's farm.
After Woodstock, Melanie founded her own record label, Neighborhood Records, and released the smash hit "Brand New Key" in 1971, which hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Throughout the 1970s, she continued releasing albums and touring internationally, building a devoted following in Europe particularly.
Melanie remains one of the most unique voices to emerge from the Woodstock era, known for her raw emotional delivery and folk-rock style. Her connection to Woodstock 1969 remains central to her musical legacy.
